Inspired by Michael White’s quote, “The problem is the problem, not the person,” we worked together with children and adults to externalise and visualise the problems they were facing and to explore what these meant in their lives. What emerged was a colourful collection of difficulties, worries, dilemmas and obstacles expressed in clay, drawings, cartoons and other creative forms.

Monsieur Anger, The Tear Monster, The Black Box, The Invasive Weed of Addiction, The Wall of Ideals, Loss Hurts, and many others found their way onto our table.

Step by step, the knowledge, skills and wisdom that children and adults developed in responding to these problems became visible. We decided to gather their creative externalisations in this small book, both as a testament to their efforts and as a source of inspiration for social workers, teachers, psychologists, therapists, clients, and anyone who is curious.

Perhaps you, too, are facing a problem that turns your life upside down. Or perhaps you work with people whose lives are shaped by the problems they encounter. If so, this book was written with you in mind.
