De missie van de Opleiding Partnerrelatie-, Gezins-, en Systeempsychotherapie is om een universitaire opleiding aan te bieden aan artsen, klinisch psychologen en klinisch orthopedagogen om, bouwend op hun bestaande vaardigheden en kennis, de theorie en de praktijk van de partnerrelatie-, gezins- en systeempsychotherapie aan te leren en te ontwikkelen. Hierbij dienen we vanzelfsprekend te voldoen aan de professionele standaarden voor een gekwalificeerde en onafhankelijke praktijk als partnerrelatie-, gezins-, en systeempsychotherapeut, zoals bepaald door de Belgische Vereniging voor Relatie- en Gezinstherapie en Systeemcounseling, de European Family Therapy Association en het advies in verband met psychotherapie van de Federale Raad voor Geestelijke Gezondheidszorgberoepen (FRGGZB/2020/advies-003: psychotherapie). 
In lijn met bovenstaande missie wordt er binnen onze opleiding gewerkt vanuit vier grote lijnen, die onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden zijn. Deze zijn: (1) theoretische kennis en achtergrondtheorie, (2) supervisie en zelfreflectie, (3) procesevaluatie en groepsproces, en (4) wetenschappelijk denken en werken. Deze lijnen lopen over de vier opleidingsjaren heen en er wordt naar gestreefd om elke opleideling hierin tot groei en ontwikkeling te laten komen. Het belang van elk van de lijnen fluctueert weliswaar doorheen de vier opleidingsjaren, maar ze zijn alle gericht op het ontwikkelen van therapeutische kennis, vaardigheden, en attitude.

In huidige bijdrage gaan wij in op lijn 4, met name het wetenschappelijk denken en werken. In wat volgt zullen wij achtereenvolgens stilstaan bij het wat, waarom, en hoe hiervan binnen onze therapieopleiding
