Het is de overtuiging van BEA VAN DEN BERGH, professor ontwikkelingspsychologie, dat ouders recht hebben op meer dan een gepolariseerd debat over ‘de eerste 1000 dagen’. Maar in recente artikels en opiniestukken wordt tegenspraak juist aangewakkerd. Kan de bezorgdheid van diegenen die de tegenspraak aanwakkeren samengevat worden als: ‘Wordt er té veel nadruk gelegd op het belang van de eerste 1000 dagen voor de ontwikkeling van het kind? Komen ouders daardoor té veel onder druk te staan? Dat laatste kán toch niet de bedoeling zijn; hoe dat voorkomen of hoe daaraan verhelpen?’ Of je er nu actief aan deelneemt of er op andere manier bij betrokken bent, het discours over ‘de eerste 1000 dagen’ gaat over het welzijn van kinderen én ouders – niet alleen aan de start van het leven, maar gedurende de hele levensloop. Dat gegeven dreigt door die tegenspraak op de achtergrond te verdwijnen. Bea Van den Bergh hoopt dat met dit strijdschrift een communicatie kan ontstaan die dat gegeven weer in de schijnwerpers plaatst. Bij dit debat heeft ze een tweevoudige bekommernis: één die maatschappelijk en beleidsgericht is, en één die betrekking heeft op wetenschappelijk onderzoek. Ze zal zich in deze bijdrage vooral toespitsen op internationaal en eigen onderzoek over de gevolgen voor de nakomeling van prenatale (dus vóór de eigenlijke geboorte) blootstelling aan angst, depressie en stress bij de moeder. Ze vindt de vertaling van up-to-date onderzoeksresultaten in dit domein naar het brede publiek, waar ouders een heel belangrijke doelgroep van uitmaken, maar ook de vertaling van onderzoeksinzichten naar zorgverstrekkers en het beleid heel belangrijk, om op die manier een bijdrage te leveren aan het uit de wereld helpen van misverstanden, doemdenken en determinisme.
