In dit artikel beschrijf ik een ecologische visie op mensen, een visie waarin een mens wordt gezien als onlosmakelijk verbonden met diens omgeving: met de relaties die die onderhoudt, de ruimtes die die bewoont en de objecten die die gebruikt. 
Vanuit dit perspectief wordt identiteit niet opgevat als iets individueel of afgesloten, maar als iets dat voortdurend verweven is met de wereld om ons heen. In therapie wordt de ruimte zoals ze wordt beleefd, gedeeld en getransformeerd zo een hefboom voor verandering en een actieve partner in het therapeutisch proces.
Verschillende kernbegrippen, zoals transcontextualiteit, open functionaliteit en biofiele ruimtes, nodigen ons uit om de rol van ruimte te herdenken als die van een ware cotherapeut.
Ik sluit mijn artikel af met de beschrijving van een casus waarin ik iets wil tonen van hoe deze theorie onze praktijk kan verrijken. Ik belicht er één concrete methodiek: de ‘de lijn der plaatsen’.
